Sainte-Maxime
The name Sainte-Maxime appears to have been bestowed by the monks of the Lérins Islands. Indeed, these ecclesiastics are said to have given our village, then under construction, the name of one of the saints of their order: Sainte Maxime. According to legend, Maxime was the daughter of the Count of Grasse, Lord of Antibes. Born into a noble family, she was drawn to religious life and left behind her sumptuous existence and wealth to devote herself entirely to God.
After taking her vows at the Monastery of Saint-Cassien, the nun quickly became a model for her community. It is likely for this reason that she was chosen to lead the Monastery of Callian, where she spent her final days. The residents of Sainte-Maxime are invited to pay tribute to their patron saint during the patronal feast, celebrated every 15 May, the anniversary of her passing.
